How much will it cost to spend the summer working and studying at the UC Center Sacramento?

That's a really good question with, unfortunately, a fairly complicated answer! The short answer is: Spending the summer at UCCS is roughly equivalent to the cost of living and taking summer sessions classes at your home campus.

The overall cost of the Program during the summer can be broken down into two parts: 1) Constant Costs that are the same for all Scholar Interns, and 2) Registration Costs which are different for each Scholar Intern and vary according to a number of different factors, including whether you're participating in the Public Policy or Journalism Program, your home campus, your financial aid status, and how many units you'll be earning in Sacramento. We've tried to break it down clearly below. To calculate your total cost for a summer as a UC Center Sacramento Scholar Intern, add the Constant Cost value to your estimated Registration Cost. ** Summer 2010 Registration Costs will be posted in January 2010. **

Summer 2010 Constant Costs

For Summer 2010, all Summer Scholar Interns can expect to pay the following for the 11-week session:

Summer PUBLIC POLICY Program for students from ANY CAMPUS

Summer JOURNALISM Program for ALL campuses except UC San Diego
Students who participate in the Summer Journalism Program will register for the internship and course via the UC Berkeley School of Journalism. These are variable unit courses and students can decide how many units they would like to earn and pay for: 1-2 for the internship and 2-4 units for the class. UC Berkeley Summer Sessions charges $254 per unit plus a $92 Campus Fee. This means that the registration cost for the Summer Journalism Program can range from $854 (3 units) to $1616 (6 units). Remember that students must be registered for a minimum of 6 units to be eligible for summer financial aid. Also, all students will spend the same amount of time at their internship and complete the same amount of work in their classes regardless of how many units they earn.

Summer JOURNALISM Program for UC SAN DIEGO students
UC San Diego students in the Summer Journalism Program will register for the Journalism Class through UC Berkeley Summer Sessions and for the Journalism internship through UCSD's Academic Internship Program. The journalism class through UC Berkeley can be taken for 2-4 units and the cost is $254 per unit plus a $92 Campus Fee. The internship can be taken for 2, 4, 8, or 12 units and the cost is $158 per unit. Remember that UCSD students must be registered for a minimum of 8 units to be eligible for summer financial aid. Also, all students will spend the same amount of time at their internship and complete the same amount of work in their classes regardless of how many units they earn. Add your estimated Registration Costs from both Berkeley and San Diego to the Constant Costs value above ($5530) to estimate the overall cost of the program.

Summer PUBLIC POLICY Program for students from ANY CAMPUS
Some Public Policy students will be registering for classes with their home campus' Summer Sessions program (UCLA, UCM, UCR, UCSD, UCSB, and UCSC) while students from the other campuses (UCB, UCD, UCI) will register with UC Riverside's Summer Sessions Program. For summer, you will be charged on a per-unit basis and the cost per unit varies from campus to campus. To estimate your registration cost for the summer, find your campus in the table below, determine how many units you will be taking, then multiply that number by the Summer Sessions Cost per Unit value. Add that sub-total to the Constant Cost Value above ($5530) to arrive at your total cost estimate.

Summer Sessions Financial Aid

Students eligible for financial aid must complete a special application to receive financial aid during Summer Sessions, even if they received financial aid during the previous academic year and are expecting to receive aid during the upcoming one. After you are admitted to the Program, the UCCS staff will help you complete the necessary financial aid paperwork.
